LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network on the internet. Here are some interesting facts about the website. The staggering numbers come directly from LinkedIn.

  1. LinkedIn started out in the living room of co-founder Reid Hoffman in 2002.
  2. LinkedIn officially launched on May 5, 2003. It had 4,500 members after its first month.
  3. LinkedIn has approximately 161 million members in over 200 countries and territories.
  4. People join LinkedIn at a rate of around two new members per second. That’s approximately 172,800 people per day!
  5. 61% of LinkedIn members are located outside of the United States.
  6. LinkedIn is available in seventeen languages.
  7. LinkedIn is headquartered in Mountain View, CA. It also has offices all over the world, including New York, Chicago, Dublin, London, Madrid, Melbourne, Paris, Stockholm, Tokyo, Toronto and more.
  8. LinkedIn expanded from about 500 full-time employees in 2010 to approximately 2,500 today.
  9. As of March 31, 2012, LinkedIn counts Executives from all of the 2011 Fortune 500 companies are LinkedIn members. 82 of the 100 companies use LinkedIn’s corporate hiring solutions.
  10. LinkedIn’s management team is comprised of seasoned executives from companies like Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, PayPal, TiVo and Electronic Arts.
  11. More than 2 million companies have LinkedIn Company Pages.
  12. LinkedIn’s revenues have at least doubled over the prior year for seven straight quarters. The revenue is generated which from hiring solutions, marketing solutions and premium subscriptions.
  13. Students and recent college graduates are the fastest-growing demographic on LinkedIn.
  14. LinkedIn members performed nearly 4.2 billion searches on the platform in 2011. They are on pace to surpass 5.3 billion in 2012.
  15. LinkedIn is ranked as the 31st most-visited website worldwide.

While Facebook remains the dominating force in social media, LinkedIn is the network for choice for business professionals. Its exponential growth speaks for itself.
