How large your LinkedIn contact list should be in order to be effective is debatable. It depends on you, how knowledgeable you are in using this form of social media, how much time you have to devote to the follow up it requires, and the type business with which you are involved.
As a general rule, I suggest having your list be as large as you can handle. The more people to whom you are linked, the more potential business there is for you, the more people want to link to you, and the more you are perceived as someone who has something to offer.
At a certain point, diminishing returns will set in, but you aren’t really using LinkedIn the way it is intended to be if you have only a handful of contacts.
Remember, if you are linked to people that you feel are of no benefit to you, it is easy to unlink them. Taking a chance on someone doesn’t mean it has to be forever.
LinkedIn also helps you control your online identity. Your LinkedIn profile will appear at the top of search engine results, allowing you to control the first impression people get when they search for you online.
In addition to a personal profile, you can also set up a company page to promote your business.
