Improve SEO with Google’s Page Rank Algorithm

Google Search Algorithm Graph

Internet gurus often discuss the importance of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), but few truly know what exactly goes into page ranking. It’s common knowledge that Google uses a complex algorithm to determine how pages rank in search results. Understanding what that algorithm entails is another story.

Thanks to the folks at SEOmoz, we now have a better look at its inner workings. The website conducts a biennial search ranking factors survey and used the results to crack the code. According to the 72 SEOs surveyed, here are the components of Google’s infamous ranking algorithm (which you can also view on the pie graph above):

  • 23% – Trust/Authority of the Host Domain
  • 22% – Link Popularity of the Specific Page
  • 20% – Anchor Text of External Links to the Page
  • 15% – On-Page Keyword Usage
  • 7% – Registration & Hosting Data
  • 6% – Traffic & CTR Data
  • 5% – Social Graph Metrics

The biggest factor in determining SEO success is the general trust and authority of a domain. The number of links to a specific page is a close second. Rounding out the top 3 is the clickable link text that leads to the page.

Many SEO specialists place a large importance on using specific keywords, so it’s interesting to note that it actually ranks fourth in the algorithm. It’s still significant, no doubt, but perhaps not as much as some think.

With all of this in mind, here are some things you can do to help improve your Google page ranking:

  • Write unique, compelling content
  • Use keywords appropriately
  • Provide a good headline
  • Fill out meta descriptions
  • Link to high-ranking websites
  • Create content landing pages
  • Submit your content to directories
  • Promote your content using social media

It’s important to remember that it is people who use search engines, not robots. They are the ones who will be reading your website, and no one wants to suffer through something that was written solely to satisfy an algorithm.

Hopefully these tips on Google’s page rank algorithm will help to improve your SEO.

Yea, it’s definitely challenging. The time it takes to get results in the top of the engines, spots 1, 2 and 3 (the ones that really count) can be different for different levels of competition for your targeted keywords. I’m doing quite well after two short months with a computer repair (local) company, with medium competition. More competitive terms that are sought out nationwide are totally going to take more time. Overall, either way, it takes time. So yea, I agree with what you’re saying, mostly.
